The First Jobs Report of 2015

bigstock-job-search-vacancy-for-jobs-on-46555552Well 2014 is in the books and we now have our first Jobs Report of the New Year. All indications are that we are seeing a continuation of a strong hiring pattern and there is no sign of it letting up any time soon. We’d say that’s good news.

Let’s dig into the report and see what the trends are. First as we saw, there were 257, 000 jobs added in January 2015. A trend that goes right in line with what we have been seeing for the past several months. And after revisions to the last Jobs report, we see that in 2014, 3,116,000 jobs were created. A pretty good number.

And while numbers do matter, we can tell you that as a recruiter in Boston, we are seeing activity like we haven’t seen in some time. Companies are hiring and they are planning for new growth. There’s always a political aspect to these reports but the bottom line is there is a lot of hiring activity going on out there.

In terms of history, not since January 2001 have we seen this many job openings. According to data provided by the Department of Labor, there were five million job openings by the end of December.

There is also another important report that unless you are in the recruiting or hiring industry, you might not be familiar with and that’s the JOLTS Report. This report digs a little deeper in the trends and also shows how many people are quitting their jobs which can be a good thing. More confidence leads to more people willing to explore other opportunities. Or quite frankly, quit their job.

Another report that just came out is the Small Business Optimism Index. And while the index dropped slightly in January, all indications are that hiring in small business is still strong and small business owners remain optimistic. Job creation has been steady and the data should show that will continue.
