Paid Leave In Massachusetts- Is Your Company Ready?

On July 1, 2015, the Massachusetts Sick Leave Law will go into effect. In short, a Massachusetts employer must provide employees with one hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked. All employees start accruing sick time starting on July 1, 2015.Sick Leave

Here are a few important details of the new law:

Full and part time employees of companies that have 11 or more on staff are eligible for sick leave. They are eligible to earn up to 40 hours of paid sick leave. If you have less than 11 employees, your staff is eligible for 40 hours of unpaid sick time.

As we mentioned, employees earn one hour of sick time for every 30 hours worked and they can carry over 40 hours to the next calendar year.

For new employees, an employer is not required to offer sick time until that staff member has worked at least 90 days.

Employees can also use their sick time in one hour increments.

The use of sick time is wide ranging. An employee can use their sick time for any type of medical condition or that of a family member such as a child, parent or spouse.

As an employer, you cannot interfere with an employee’s right to take their earned sick time and you cannot retaliate against that employee in any way.
