Description

The Opportunity

An established statewide nonprofit serving people with intellectual disabilities is seeking a Head of Finance & Administration. This leader will direct the organization’s financial and administrative operations and serve as a strategic partner to the President & CEO, leadership team, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee.

The role is well suited to an accomplished nonprofit Controller, Director of Finance, or Director of Finance & Operations who is ready to become the organization’s senior finance and administrative leader. As the organization expands, the position may offer the opportunity to assume broader operational leadership responsibilities.

Position Scope

The Head of Finance & Administration oversees finance, accounting, budgeting and forecasting, treasury and investments, audit and compliance, human resources, technology, facilities, insurance, and administrative services. The position leads a small, experienced administrative team and works across departments to strengthen financial discipline, operational effectiveness, and long-range planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead financial strategy, accounting, and administrative operations in alignment with the organization’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Own annual budgets, rolling forecasts, internal financial plans, and multi-year projections; monitor actual performance against established priorities and benchmarks.
  • Prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting; monitor cash flow and liquidity and oversee the relationship with the organization’s external investment manager.
  • Conduct trend, scenario, and benchmark analyses that support strategic decisions by the President & CEO and leadership team.
  • Maintain effective internal controls and oversee compliance with applicable state and federal requirements.
  • Lead the annual external audit and IRS Form 990 process and coordinate with auditors and other professional advisers.
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee; prepare clear financial and operational materials that facilitate informed governance.
  • Maintain oversight of fixed assets, acquisitions, depreciation, office facilities, technology, equipment, insurance, and selected service contracts.
  • Partner with program, fundraising, and administrative leaders to evaluate spending, improve efficiency, and align resources with organizational priorities.
  • Oversee human resources, including recruitment, personnel records, employment compliance, compensation, benefits, and the employee evaluation process.
  • Lead, support, and develop an experienced administrative team while fostering an inclusive, respectful, and mission-centered workplace.
  • Perform other responsibilities assigned by the President & CEO.

Candidate Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Approximately 7-12 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including significant work in a nonprofit organization.
  • Demonstrated responsibility for nonprofit financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, internal controls, audit coordination, and Form 990 preparation.
  • Experience presenting financial information to senior leaders, a board, or a board Finance Committee.
  • Sound judgment, strong analytical ability, and the capacity to translate financial information for non-financial audiences.
  • Collaborative, low-ego leadership style and demonstrated success leading experienced employees through process improvement and organizational change.
  • Ability to oversee HR, technology, facilities, and other administrative functions; deep technical expertise in each area is not required.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to inclusion and enthusiasm for the organization’s mission.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with QuickBooks and Salesforce is preferred. CPA or advanced degree is a plus, but not required.

Work Location and Compensation

This position is based in the organization’s MetroWest Massachusetts office and requires a regular on-site presence, with some flexibility based on organizational needs. The anticipated salary range is $100,000-$130,000, complemented by a nonprofit executive benefits package. Final compensation will reflect experience and qualifications.

Equal Opportunity

The organization is an equal opportunity employer committed to building an inclusive workplace. Qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to any status protected by applicable law. Reasonable accommodations are available throughout the recruitment process.
